#bestviewersever #commenttime Thanks for all the great questions and comments, I give my best to answer as many as I can. This time we're talking about buffers in front and behind a pedalboard, switchers and FX loops, tele bridge pickups for strats, what makes Custom Shop guitars special, why having an awesome sound is not the only important detail about guitars, etc. Enjoy! @fairenoughthenwhat4 years ago Keep your 335. The 330 looks great, but your guitar sounds the best in your hands. Such a versatile instrument too. 1

@rafaelcoli47974 years ago man... first time watching your videos, just loved. Already subscribed, great video quality and playing, awesome tone!

@blueswood8544 years ago Great video Kris, Thanks! I love the 330, being a lower gain player.

@Steven_SK4 years ago You had this packed with good info. I think the 335 edged out the 330 to my ears. Both are beautiful and both sound great but the 335 sounded tad richer. My old ears though...... plus the constant Ampeg ringing damage I have! ... 1

@AlbusBand4 years ago Guitar looks & sounds great (your wicked chops don’t hurt 😘). Really enjoying these Q&A type vids. Stay well my friend.

@oldmanzen66824 years ago You sir, have the patience of a saint to answer the same questions/comments over and over again. Though I'm guessing these answers were all filmed days apart and you just wore the same close for continuity. I know that's what I'd have to do.
"FFS, I just answered thi--screw this, I'm getting myself some ice cream. I'll film an answer later."
    Heh.
Oh, and great sounds out of both those ES guitars. And as always, killer playing.

@davidburke21324 years ago For most people and for most styles, as much as I love ES-330s (and own one myself), I’d say that it doesn’t make sense having an ES-330 instead of an ES-335. The ES-335 is just must more versatile and will get wider use I’d say in most rock/pop/blues contexts that if you’re fortunate enough to be able to justify multiple instruments an ES-330 fits better as a different and unique flavour in addition to the ES-335 for most people. I’d also make a (jokey) argument about the sacrilege of an ES-330 with humbuckers instead of P90s! 😝 ...

@boomerbassmeme4 years ago I liked both of them, but can hear the difference the tone block makes. 335 seems better suited to blues and rock, 330 to jazz and cleaner acoustic type things.
So glad my signal chains are simple when I play bass and guitar and don't need a switcher! I just use a distortion pedal for extra boost and an old POD XT Live for guitar. Bass use a fly rig, envelope filter, B1 4, and a YYZ. (totally want to win the Octaver from Thomann, the one on my fly rig is terrible! The preamp and compressor are killer though) Great stuff Kris!

@rickhill62774 years ago Kris, in my opinion you should KEEP your 335! Nice Vid, please keep 'em comin'!! Cheers from Salem, Oh USA! 1

@martinwhitegloves44714 years ago Holy crap Kris...loved your lead playing that black ES330, that song was perfect for a good lead, bad Azz Kris, thank You 🙏 1

@stanislavmigra4 years ago That 330 sound god send 😍😍😍. Will you please do lesson for the opening tune?

@lueysixty-six73004 years ago Amazed at just how much I like the 335 more than the other one. Often I can't pick up much nuance over Utube. But in this case, the 335 was more focused in the mids, with a sharper, more articulate tone.
The other one was more of a rhythm tone. A beautiful rhythm tone , but a rhythm tone nonetheless. The 335 was lead.

@Buddy197514 years ago They both sound great but your 335 sounds a little brighter and full to my ears.
Judging from your other videos in relation to what you said you liked about your Tele and when you adjusted the pole pieces on your Les Paul I think your 335 meets your personal requirements better than the 330 would.
Great and very tasteful playing by the way Kris!👍

@nilsx30204 years ago What a cool coincidence! I just picked up that identical ES-330L with Bigsby, "Luther II". Yours must also be a 2015, right? It's amazing and indeed a totally different animal compared to my Custom Shop 61 VOS Reissue 335, the 330 being much more open and resonant for obvious reasons. Also the Bigsby makes a huge difference.
Your comment regarding buffer va loops regarding high end and dynamics makes me second guess, now that I'm building a new board.

  • @
@GMec784 years ago Tough call, the real question(s) is how often are you going to use the Bigsby, what do you currently do with the 335 would the 330 add to or take away from that task. If the 335 is under or rarely played then you aren’t really out anything either way. ...
  • @
@ericcarpenter32634 years ago 330 is beautiful and open sounding. 335 is rounder and beautiful. Damn Kris, I can pick one over the other, both are just amazing. Much love from Tulsa.

    @azt3ca4 years ago Great video!
    Kris, I have a question:
I recently noticed that all my shielded guitars seem to have less top end.
In a Tokai I own, at fist I thought it was the pickups... Swapped them for a set I already had and was quite familiar with.. and nothing. Then I thought it was maybe the pots and capacitors... swapped them for another set I already had and was familiar with and nothing again.
Could it be the shielding paint? The guitar is absurdly well shielded, up to the point that there's literally no hum whatsoever regardless of distortion.
If so, can I sand the shielding paint off?
    Thanks a bunch.

@gaborjaszfalvi18824 years ago Hi Kris, great content as usual! Been following you for a couple of years now and have to say you’re getting better and better in presentation. Also your english has improved significantly, may I ask if you’d been taking lessons or it just came naturally to you by living and working at Thommans? ...

@jeffreyeagen48964 years ago I'm glad you compared the 330 and 335. I've often wondered what, if any, the sound difference is between the two. The 335 sounds so much better!!
  • @
@df99994 years ago Such sweet playing. You make both of those guitars speak with the voice of angels. Like most have commented, I would give a slight edge to the 335. Most importantly for a decision, since both are so wonderful in your capable hands, why would you switch? ...
  • @
@jltrem4 years ago Did you do the humbucker pickup lowering trick on your 335?
  • @
@LadyizraelRoM4 years ago Hey Kris! I was wondering if you use a treble bleed on your tele? I'm waiting on a CS 52 Tele (same pickups as yours) on which I opted for the standard 'modern/present tele' wiring and I'm a little doubtful if that was the right choice, given that most of the custom shop spec'd teles come with their fat 50s wiring or just straight up with their tone saver treble bleed... ...

@kmichaelp45084 years ago Kris! Kris! Kris!!! Which one do you get along with best? That's what matters. If your looking for a more jazzy tone then the 330. It doesn't have the snappiness of the 335. The tone is basically the same but you don't have the singing in the 330. The 330 is not a rock machine but more controlled. Just my two cents. ...

@robcsaletta25044 years ago I have a 330 with a bigsby, just like you played in the intro. Every time I use the bigsby it looses its tuning. Any tips to help? I put on locking tuners already, it helped a little but not enough. Frustrating because I love that guitar, it limiting because it goes out of tune. ...

@antonyyuryev97504 years ago Hi) I have an unpopular opinion))) i have experience with a 3 generation of polytune tuner pedals ... I don't know why but they all heave a problem with a stealing highend of a signal (maybe it's just my strange ears...) ... maybe it's the way how the buffer in it is working ... or something else ... instead of polytune always return to super old korg tuner with a buffer ( dt10)... that's actually adds more highend... for me that's work better in signal chain. ... and for bigger board I chose use a line 6 hx(But it can be a any good modern multieffect pedal) instead of 10 separate pedals (mod/dly/rev) and without any buffer... ...

    @Oilid4 years ago Hello Kris!
    Question for your next FAQ:
    Have you tried Duesenbergs?>
If so, what are your thoughts?
And compared to guitars you have (LP and ES).
I'm heavily eyeing a "StarPlayer TV Phonic white".
Maybe an idea video demo/test for your channel or Thomann's, because there are not so much proper videos online and... no retailer where I live.

@shredgd54 years ago About what you say at : buffers are not all the same, so a single cable will always sound better than most buffers. But buffers are not all equal. Unfortunately, most companies claim their buffer is superior because of its high fidelity characteristics. However, in guitar world "high fidelity" is almost never a good idea. I would like to hear "true to the trusted guitar-cable-amp tone", instead of "the most transparent buffer" in their ads. In most cases "transparent" in fact corresponds to high treble enhancement compared to the good old cable tone, because of ultra-high impedance characteristics.
Hear this short audio I recorded in which I compare two transistor models in the same simple bipolar buffer:

They shouldn't even sound any different on paper, however hear how much more musical midrange content is with the second one. They are both cheap and common transistors, by the way. All this is to say, a buffer should be tuned with a cable tone reference, not (only) electronic performance calculations, to achieve the best result! The behavior of two theoretically equivalent transistors in the same circuit is different, as you can hear, so a buffer should be fine-tuned by ear!

@pappakahlin21724 years ago 330 all the way. 335 is so much more nasal. Swap if the feedback doesn't bother you.
  • @
@AbhinavAgarwal04 years ago twang banger is the best name for a pickup that can be! lol
  • @
@PooNinja4 years ago The soul of an instrument isn’t in the specks it’s a synergy between the player and the played. I have always love look and sound of those big old hollow body guitar’s, and with a Bigsby even better. Sadly every time I pick one up it just feels so wrong. I guess I wait till the right Gretsch comes along 😀.
??? For no#9 which of your current stable of guitars has inspired the most from you?
    ...
  • @
@dragonsquare28024 years ago I wonder why the thing is called tone block when it pretty obviously sucks tone rather than enhancing it.
It should either be called "less-feedback-block" or "less-resonance-block" imo 😁

@vw96594 years ago Thanks for reading my comment out. But science and emotion are not "either / or". Many people find both in music, and that they complement each other. You start with as exact a knowledge of the guitar's component specs and how guitars work as you can get. If you don't have that, you're destined to be hoodwinked by the snake oil salesmen out there. You'll buy pickups that don't sound anything like what you expected. New bridges that don't sound any different, or maybe worse. New electronics that may sound worse. All those things are measurable, and audible. Once you know how things affect the guitar's performance, then you can move onto how you the guitar makes you "feel". See - science AND emotions - double the value ! If you don't want to consider exact specs and a scientific understanding of guitars, that's totally up to you. But you are actually using science every time you start to talk about how different components affect the guitar. You can't pretend that is a whole different domain separate from music, as you tried to argue. Otherwise you wouldn't talk about specs at all, or how different components affect a guitar's performance. You're using science all the time, whether you realize it or not. ...
