This is the long video version of a recent "drawing" I did of a segment of the Virgo constellation for a relative's birthday card. It was a study piece for a full Virgo drawing I am hoping to do soon. For this piece, I applied fields of Fenty lipstick in three shades, then scraped the drawing with a small metal screwdriver. It's very similar to the scratchboard projects that are often assigned in art classes. My initial intention was to just brush away the lipstick, but not only was it difficult to get the detailing that I wanted with a brush, it was also impossible to scrape enough of the lipstick away to get a bright enough white for contrast. I've used this process for other star map themed drawings, but that was just for the overlaying lines, stars, and border. (You can see me using this scratch method in my KKW Celestial Skies drawing and the first drawing I uploaded with Katy Perry.) I've never actually "drawn" using this method, so that was a big motivation for doing a practice piece first. I've also shared a much faster 3-minute version of this drawing -- here's the link: /watch/s51=t&ArGl-Tn0sed0= There are a few things that are evident in this longer version that you may not have noticed in the short clip. I missed recording a couple segments, including filling in the larger area with purple at the beginning. My timer didn't go off to let me know to stop and start again and I just lost track of time there. I also wasn't recording when I drew the second eye. I have no idea what happened there. (Or would that be no eye-dea?) You will also notice in the long version how much I struggled with the hand in the drawing. While doing this piece I realized it had probably been more than 15 years since I've drawn a hand, and I'd forgotten how difficult they can be! I also removed the blue tape a little too early and ended up smudging the lipstick with a ruler trying to figure out how to scratch the border. The top line was giving me a problem because I couldn't get a decent line of sight without my head blocking the camera. I eventually elected to block the camera and just cut that part out.
