@9HoleReviews3 years ago I think the Mk12 w/ suppressor combo is easily one of the best systems from the GWOT era, however people have been misleading on how rifle accuracy works and the effectiveness of the 1-1.5MOA accuracy of the Mk12 systems.
I've got to emphasize once again:
9-shot groups: statistically harder to shoot tight + requires 80% more rounds -> much harder to cherry pick the best group to post on instagram
5-shot groups: statistically easier to shoot tight + can shoot 4x per box of 20rds -> easy to cherry pick the best group to post on instagram
...lots of people posting tight 5-shot groups that are cherry picked -> creates an illusion through the amount of cherry picked 5-shot groups on the internet that every Mk12 is sub-MOA
This drives people to think that all AR's are sub-MOA (and that only sub-MOA rifles are effective to greater distance) -> impedes our expectations and understandings of marksmanship. ... 323

Not that SVD or Mk12 are bad rifles, far from it.
But it's not a surgically precise semi-auto rifle that could compete with any decent bolt action rifle ... 360

@Painterrap3 years ago I think people loose sight of real intended function. On a day in and day out basis it’s hard for civilians to see a rifle system like the MK12 as anything other than a really cool target rifle. The reality is that the MK12 was absolutely designed to shoot human beings right in the face and kill them and coming to terms with that is best. I often think the military looks at purpose and decides what the balance is going to be. If you put all the design implements into accuracy then you are sure to loose some other attributes so they make the rifle accurate enough to complete the mission while minimizing loss of function in other areas. The bottom line is that this rifle wasn’t designed to shoot one hole groups it was designed to smack a guy right in the dome biscuit when he sticks his head out from in behind a tree at 500 yards at it is plenty accurate to accomplish that goal. I find that people often confuse rifles or pistols designed for war with competition or target rigs, they are not at all the same or designed in anyway to accomplish similar tasks!! ... 18

@AS-co8to3 years ago I have owned Mod 0 (PRI) for more than 8 years. The biggest problem with accuracy w/o suppressor is the OPS brake. I went through 3 of them before I was able to get 1.5" groupings @100 consistently. (From +2.5" with different 77gr ammunition). Second improvement is the suppressor. I was able to get it to 0.9-1.2" groupings with OPS 12. Finally somewhere after 1000 or so rounds, the rifle seemed to stabilize at about 1moa with BH 77gr OTM. Good enough for me. I was also told that changing the regular spring buffer in the stock, to a pneumatic buffer also helps with accuracy. Never tried it though, as I am not convinced it has much to do with it, but if somebody has different experience I would like to hear about it. Thanks for revisiting the MK12. Love mine and can't wait to shoot it again after my oversea assignment is over.. ... 3

@ShawnHinck3 years ago I’m defiantly not saying there aren’t magical .5moa Mk12s out there, but agreed that the level of precision people are claiming is a bit over stated. It’s still a great rifle and suppressor, but what people don’t understand is, 1.3moa is still very capable out at distance. Tyler Payne was beating the crap out of people with a 1.3moa rifle in the precision gas gun series. It’s no slouch, but I think much like the AK, certain attributes are very over stated. ... 4

@jackburton54833 years ago Excellent review as always guys. I have always been a fan of this weapons platform and I believe that it serves the purpose well that it was designed for. A DMR weapon is the intermediate between sniper and carbine and the Mk12 fills that niche quite well. I think some people have a very unrealistic view of certain rifles and what each one is capable of. I like a well rounded semi automatic rifle that has a heavy hitting round and is accurate at distance. Hitting a torso sized target at 800 yards is fine with me lol. Just my 2cents 🤷🏻‍♂️ ... 3

@Mantitude2 years ago So, as just another data point for your considerations...
I have a personal MK12-ish thing(BA barrel, otter Creek collar and can, BCM bolt, MBT trigger, PRI gen 3 tube, and Smoke Composites stock, because it only weighs ounces, and I carry this thing) that shoots regularly into .85-90~ inch groups at 100 meters with 68gr Frontier fodder(Yeah, still scratching my head on that one, too). Well, this was with the internet standard of 5 shot groups. I tried this again with your 9 shot standard, and it did show an increase in my group, generally hovering around 1.2 to 1.4 inches at the same 100 meters. This is honestly still VERY competent, despite what the internet would have you think, as I've taken it regularly to 700m, and a few times even further.
The real note worthiness of this platform is the ease of use. It's so quick to return to rest after a shot, I rarely have to search for my target to reacquire it, and that's if the domestically tame recoil even made me lose sight of what I'm shooting to begin with, which only really happens passed the four hundred meter mark.
So, TL;DR, may not be a scalpel, but it's a damn nice knife, and it's a lot quicker to use, too. ...

With this rifle it’s intended role was quick follow ups and most likely higher round count engagements. Opening up to 1.5 or 2 inches isn’t bad especially for the limited effective range of the 5.56. ...

@EboiseEboise3 years ago Just a couple of thoughts. I know PRI offers those mk12 uppers in a 1:8 and a 1:7 twist. BCM only offers a 1:8 I believe. Just wondering which ones you guys tested. I have a MK12 Mod1 clone with a 1:7 Douglas barrel and at 100 yards around 1” to 1.5” with black hills 77 gr.
My 1:8 BCM is a little bit bigger with the groups. Shooting both suppressed. Really enjoy your channel and watching your reviews. Keep up the great work. ... 1

@brazzy14673 years ago I have built two Mk12ish's a mod O and mod H. Now I use ZEV upper and lower receivers, Forward Controls BCG, Noveske barrels, geissele triggers, and the VLTOR A5 buffer system all the other parts I got from PRI. I just ordered a Allen Engineering suppressor and I sent my barrels to them to fit the collar on the barrel for the suppressor. Before I did that with my 77gr OTM handloads at a hundred yards I was getting half inch to quarter inch groups and those are 5 round groups. I'll do 9 round groups when I get my barrels and suppressor back. But I'm shooting custom built firearms with custom handloads. I used the Mk12 in the ARMY and I built my personal one the way I wanted it. ... 3

@sethrich59983 years ago This is why I prefer Mean Radius as opposed to Extreme Spread for judging precision. Extreme Spread of a group is statistically insignificant and can only grow worse as sample size increases. Besides, everyone picks their best group as the representation of capability when in reality the worst group with a particular load is the best representation of its actual capability in extreme spread. With Mean Radius you can combine data from all groups to have a sample size of every round you’ve ever fired. This value can also go up or down allowing you to truly track changes in performance over time. Additionally you can determine the Standard Deviation and have statistical hit probability from the distribution for a given target size/distance. ... 1

@jregulatori46723 years ago My old Mod H with a Bartlein from Compass Lake would do 1"-ish on a bagged rest but it was real finicky on ammo. Like the IMI would be 2" but switching to Black Hills would instantly shrink it. My friends also have various MK12s and they all seem have a favorite brand of the 77gr MK262 variety.
If you own a MK12, it's worth it to try the 3-4 various MK262 77gr OTM brands out there. I'm sure the stuff is impossible to find at the moment and it wasn't exactly cheap when I was shooting it years ago. ...

@goatismyname3 years ago I got a BCM Mk12 years back when they began to offer them with a keymod Handguard. I tested the match ammo available, and found my rifle did its best with Federal GMM 77gr OTM, with a .6moa.
That said, I prefer not to pay 1.25 (2015) per round. So I decided on Federal 69gr HPBT at .8moa , and 75cents a round (2015 prices) . ... 1

@Rowrin3 years ago I think a lot of people confuse the mk12's role with that of a dedicated DMR. Sure it can perform some DMR roles at the closer end of typical DMR ranges, but beyond that the 5.56 nato cartridge becomes the limiting factor. The mk12 seems like it's a rifle designed to get the most out of the 5.56 cartridge, while still keeping the higher volume of fire a semi-auto rifle provides over a bolt-action. The best semi-auto 5.56 is just going to be limited to the max performance that the cartridge can provide. That's not to say the mk12 is bad, it's a very good rifle, but people need to tailor their expectations to its design philosophy. ... 1

@300balake_33 years ago That brake threw handloads 1.5+, took it off with a sico brake and group's now are -.75. that set up really is designed to shoot with the aem5. Not sure how others results are but that's my experience.

@christopherbain31722 years ago So I have a DDmk12 (not a pure clone). It shots consistently 1.5” at 100 BUT holds then shrinks (MOA wise) to 2.5” at 300. In other words the further I reach to a certain point, the better the MOA . I have had other rifles perform similarly depending on ammo (in this case Black Hills 77gr OTM). .8 MOA at 300 yard with 5 shot groups to me is solid, but ha do never shot at 300 I would have thought it was quite the let down. @SCQT3 years ago While my precision AR is not a Mk12 (bedded 18" Compass Lake Bartlein, SRC bolt, ADM upper/lower, Leu 3-18, DA Nomad, TT Diamond), i have to say I would have been incredibly disappointed with it if all I ever shot out of it was factory ammo (BH 77 SMK / TMK / 69 SMK, IMI 77, CBC 77, FGMM 69/77). They ALL shot over an inch, some significantly more, in 10rd groups. Handloads were where the true performance was unlocked with 2x sub moa 6x5s including 2 <.5moa groups(yeah so what, i agree), pushing 77 Bergers over N540.
I understand that this really wasnt the point of this video, and do think this definitely needed to be said, however i would be interested to see what this can do if Henry works up a load for it. IMO that would be the "true" potential of the system, even if not the "as fielded" potential.
Over all I absolutely love the Mk12 and think it is still a phenomenal concept, but as civilians(esp almost 20 years later), we have the ability to build superior systems(for accuracy)
And no, it definitely aint a bolt gun. For <50% of the money my Tikka CTR or TACA1 demolish this rifle in any kind of pure accuracy test, doubly so when shooting off anything other than a bench / prone, and do it more consistently, even when shooting factory ammo.

@smokeeater9173 years ago I've always found the issued MK262mod1 to be lacking in the accuracy department. I've got a whole bag of it and I've probably only shot about twenty rounds of it due to it's deviation. If you really want to test the ability of the gun, I'd suggest handloading for it. With contract and commercial stuff I get the same groups as you're getting. Handloads I'm able to consistently get sub-moa. If you'd like a few more rounds of 262 let me know, I'd be happy to donate some to the channel. ... 1
